Glory

It was back to being cold as shit. I made a stop at that coffee shop that I saw Ms. Riley in. I grabbed a medium coffee before heading to work. Lulah letting me use his car had been a lifesaver. Ms. Riley wasn’t at work yesterday; I was anxious to see if she’d be in today. She could only avoid me for so long. And I knew that’s exactly what she was doing.

“Good morning, Glorious,” she shuffled into the office with shades on.

“Good morning,” I grabbed my coffee, taking a sip to ensure she saw my cup.

She hadn’t even looked in my direction. She was getting settled around the office.

“So, I have an update on Mrs. Evergreen, she is not returning. She has made the decision to be a stay-at-home mom. While we wish her the best, we must move along with business. I will now be your permanent supervisor.” She pulled vanilla folders from her briefcase.

The one on top had a stain and I needed to get my eyes on it. I wasn’t sure about the others but that one was one the man pointed to specifically.

“Did you hear me?”

“Huh?” I asked her.

“I mean, Glory, get it together.” She shook her head at me. “I will now be your permanent supervisor, so you will be taking the office next door. This worked for a temporary situation but in all honesty, I need my space. I like to work alone.”

“Oh, ok.” I stood from my seat, gathering my things.

I bet she didn’t want me in her office. Sneaky ass bitch. My head snapped at her to see if I had said that out loud or not. Sometimes my mouth and thoughts moved on their own.

“Is everything alright?” she asked me.

“Yep,” I nodded my head. With all of my things packed into my leather briefcase, I walked over to her desk. “It has been a pleasure.” I reached to shake her hand and she looked at it like she saw me wipe my ass with it.

“Glorious, are you sure everything is ok?” She took her glasses off. “We still work together; you’re just going to the office next door. That’s it. I’ll be in there shortly to be updated on these cases.”

“I’m fine. Are you ok? You missed yesterday and I was a little worried about you,” I asked, making eye contact.

When she looked down so did I. The coffee-stained file belonged to Dennis Eaton. In my head I told myself to shut up over and over because my mind was racing and anything was liable to come out of my mouth.

“I was stuck in the house all weekend with a cold. I needed the extra day to build my energy back, but I’m fine, really.” She looked up with a smile.

“Well, alright. I’ll get out your hair,” I said, walking towards the door.

“Thank you,” she went back to writing notes.

“Oops,” I had made it just outside of the door, “almost forgot my coffee.” I laughed, going back for my cup.
